Lady Falcons Beat Boardman in Final Seconds

Just three days after suffering a heartbreaking loss to Canfield with under a minute to play, the Fitch girls found themselves feeling opposite emotions on Saturday as they went on the road and beat rival Boardman by hitting the winning shot with five seconds to play in a 49-47 win.

The Lady Falcons led 12-11 after the first quarter before outscoring the Lady Spartans 14-9 to take a 26-20 lead into the half. Boardman flipped the script by taking the third quarter 13-5 to make it 34-33 heading into the final period. As the teams played a tight game from the start, there was no doubt the contest would go down to the wire.

Tied at 47 and looking to hold for the final shot with time running down, Fitch senior Amiya Harris drove to the hoop and found fellow senior Jeweliana Farmer who connected on a wide open layup with less than 5 seconds left on the clock. The 49-47 lead would stand as the final score as the Lady Spartans couldn't get the ball in play in time for a desperation attempt.

Harris scored 15 to lead the scoring for the Lady Falcons, who improve to 7-11 overall on the season and 3-3 in All-American Conference play. Also in double digits were senior Kylie Folwein with 14 and junior Kaliana Ray with 11. Jeweliana Farmer finished with 8 including the game winner while Kaelyn Bower converted a free throw to get on the stat sheet with 1 point.

Prior to the varsity contest, the Fitch JV squad had no trouble with the Lady Spartans as the visitors knocked off their rivals by a score of 18-8 in a game which consisted of just two quarters. Stevonna Wright, Maria Kouros, and Aviella Swift each put up 4 points while Ayanna Williamsn, Araya Hayes, and Bella Baumgart all had 2 points apiece.

The Lady Falcons travel to South Range to take on the Lady Raiders on Monday, February 2 with the JV game starting at 5:30pm. The JV squads will play two quarters with the varsity tipoff to follow at approximately 6:15pm.
